Watercolor Classes In Berthoud, Colorado

Watercolor Classes

The Watercolor Studio at Antonella Farm

Have you always admired the delicate nature of watercolors and wanted to try painting with this medium?  Have you been told that watercolors are the most difficult to control?  I have been a watercolor artist for over 40 years.  For many of those years, I have also taught watercolor art classes.  Once you know a few tricks, watercolors are the most enticing type of paint; you will never tire of watching the colors flow onto the paper.  If you struggle to figure out how to work with this translucent medium, our Watercolor Workshops will help you.

The delicate nature of watercolors lends itself perfectly to painting flowers; this is why I have chosen to teach our Floral Watercolor Workshops.

Spend a day surrounded by flowers at the farm and join our Watercolor Workshops.  Our farm is in Berthoud, Colorado (just north of Longmont).

Our workshops include the following:

  • You will learn invaluable watercolor tips and techniques while painting flowers from our gardens at Antonella Farm.  A limited number of seats will allow for plenty of individual guidance.

  • We will provide you with all of the supplies you need to complete the workshop.

  • We will tour the flower gardens (when in season) and see what is happening in the flower studio.  You are welcome to take photos for future painting references.

  • In the morning, enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks.  At noon, we will take a lunch break, at which time you are welcome to join us for a complimentary refreshing four-course lunch.  The organic vegetable farm down the street will provide many ingredients on the menu.  It doesn't get more local than that!  If you prefer to go off on your own for a lunch break, you are also welcome to do that.

  • At the end of the workshop, you will have your floral painting to take home and a bouquet of freshly harvested flowers from our farm.

Your workshop will be held from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.  At times, we may run to 5:00 pm.

We have workshops for all skill levels.

You do not need to know how to draw to take this class!  The sketch of

your painting is done for you.  This class focuses on how to paint flowers.

The fee for each workshop is $275.  You are welcome to sign up for more than one workshop.

This workshop is nonrefundable but transferable if you cannot attend. We will refund your money (less credit card fees) if someone from the waitlist can fill your place at the workshop.

How To Select The Best Workshop For You

We have structured our workshops to provide a progressive learning experience. If you have little to no prior experience, the Beginner Workshop is perfect for you. Once you complete the Beginner Workshop, your next step is Workshop #2, which builds upon the skills you learned. Following that, Workshop #3 will help you integrate everything you've learned by using composition to create an atmospheric painting.

If you already have watercolor experience, both Workshops #2 and #3 will be ideal. You are welcome to choose one, two, or all three workshops based on your preference.

For more information about each workshop, see below:

Beginner Workshop

If you haven't taken a watercolor class and need to know basic techniques, this is your class.  Maybe you have dabbled a bit, but you are struggling.  In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of painting with watercolors.  We will also discuss choosing the best paper, brushes, and paints.

If you are beginning your watercolor journey, this workshop will help. Since the workshops are designed to be a learning progression in watercolors, you can benefit from experiencing all three.

Workshop # 2

If you have taken the Beginner Workshop or have some watercolor experience, you are ready for this workshop. We will not spend time on essential techniques like blending. Perhaps you have painted with watercolors but are still struggling. This class will help you discover methods to avoid problems. It is also designed for those who need more guidance on techniques such as softening edges, ensuring harmony between the background and subject, and mastering flower painting techniques.

Workshop #3 will greatly benefit you after taking this workshop.

Workshop #3 Composition

This class is for those of you who are familiar with watercolors.  You may want to loosen up a bit when you paint flowers.  Perhaps you want to learn a fresh perspective on your watercolors.  Workshop #3 builds on the concepts taught in Workshop #2.  While many artists paint what they see, this alone is not enough.  Understanding composition is essential for transforming a subject into a captivating painting.  Composition is the core of your artwork.  In this workshop, you will learn how to create compelling paintings by effectively using shape, color, tonal values, and placement to enhance your compositions.  This workshop is a transformative experience for every painter.

Please note: To take this workshop, you need to have some experience with the basics of watercolor. You must know how to apply a wash of color and how to blend. If you have taken Workshop #2 or are an experienced painter, you are ready for this workshop.
